Monkey Watching In Borneo

By Jonny Blair

If you're staying in Sabah in Malaysia on the island of Borneo, it's highly likely you'll have heard of proboscis monkeys. They are wild, they live in the jungle and they have long noses. But more importantly they are native to the island of Borneo (Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia). This is the only place on planet earth that you can see them outside a zoo. It's worth doing, and naturally it's a popular touristy thing to do.

How to organise watching Proboscis Monkeys in Borneo.

There are lots of companies offering these types of tours in Borneo so it will be easy enough to organise. If you are a really tight budget backpacker then you could realistically hitchhike or hire a car and drive out to Beaufort Town yourself then try to blag onto one of the boats that take you to where the proboscis monkeys are. I really don't recommend it.

How much do you pay to watch these monkeys?

Overall you should expect to pay around 60 Ringitts. This includes almost everything you need on the tour such as boats, transport there and back and of course the afternoon tea and the buffet dinner. It is a really good trip well worth booking!

How do you get to Klias Wetlands Park for watching Proboscis Monkeys in Borneo?

Transport was comfortable and efficient and all included in the tour. It was a small mini-bus we got. It took us from Kota Kinabalu to the venue.

The trip price should include the transport which makes it all easy enough to organise. In general it's not too difficult and can be suitable for adults, pensioners and children. Most people love it!

You will see other types of monkeys without the long noses such as this one. It's not a proboscis monkey.

You arrive at Klias Wetlands Park and have you afternoon tea (this includes buffet food). Then you put on your lifejackets and board the boat. Your guide on the boat will alert you when the proboscis monkeys are viewable but you ail more than likely see them yourself. You will also see crocodiles. The boat tour will last around an hour and just before it gets dark you will be taken to a riverside restaurant for a buffet dinner. That's really all there is to it!
