A Look At Camping In Colorado

By Ines Flores

Vacations can be special family bonding experiences when spent together doing something that everyone enjoys. Roughing it in the wild has that effect on many families. They are away from common distractions and can focus on getting to know each other better. Camping in Colorado offers excellent opportunities for families and individuals to explore the wilder side of their lives.

With year round camp sites available most locations offer a wide variety of amenities for their guests. Most offer not only lots for those with campers, trailers, and RVs but areas for those who prefer using tents. Many have on site laundry rooms and shower areas for guest convenience. Picnic areas complete with bar-b-ques and fire pits are available in the warmer months of the year and during colder months you may find a kitchen area for cooking and serving meals.

A little research will acquaint you with the different areas of this state and the attractions each area has to offer for campers. The high dessert area can offer equestrian tours into the desert with views of the Arapaho National Forest. You might also enjoy cross country skiing in the winter months or hiking into the canyons and mountains. In other areas you can visit archaeological digs or dinosaur and fossil tours.

The rivers that flow through this state carve spectacular canyons that display eons of history in the layers of soil they expose. These same rivers offer opportunities for various water sports such as white water rafting or fishing. The calmer areas of the rivers offer kayaking, slower rafting cruises down the river banks with picnics on the beaches.

There are numerous lakes and rivers that help create areas that house the nearly four thousand camp sites in this state. The lakes will provide you with canoe rides over glassy waters and views of Mount Evans and the highest peaks of the Rocky Mountains. You will find over ninety three miles of sandy beaches on the Gunnison River banks providing wilderness camping and water sports of every nature.

Commercial camp sites offer hookups for large campers that supply water and electricity. Those who are planning an extended stay can rent the spaces for a monthly or weekly fee. There are usually retail outlets within a thirty minute drive from these sites where guests are able to hunt souvenirs, find groceries or enjoy an evening of dinner and a movie.

There are many historic tours available for tourists and campers. Visiting homes of early settlers and outlaw hideouts give insight into what it was like living in the wilderness over a hundred years ago. Following the Santa Fe Trail is another guided tour that is available for visitors. Quantrill's Raiders and Wild Bill McKinney have sites that are included in many tours of this area.

If you want to plan a vacation that is family friendly and will allow you to bring your pet along with you the camping opportunities available in this state offer the perfect answer for your situation.
