A Sneak Peak At The History Of The Most Historic Towns Colorado

By Walter Graham

It is no secret that it took a while before Colorado was admitted to the Union. It is often regarded as a new state in American culture owing to the fact that it was the 38th state to join the union in 1876. Nevertheless, it is a state rich in history. Here are some of the most historic towns Colorado.

If archived records of American history are to be believed, San Luis holds the mark for being the oldest town in the entire state. Its first settlers were a group of Tao people, with the year being 1851. At the time, the settlement fell under the jurisdiction of the state of New Mexico. Nevertheless, territorial changes were made in 1861, with its mandate being placed under the current territorial jurisdiction.

The beginning of 1858 saw the establishment of another town called Boulder. There were few buildings during its first year, but more structures, including schools, were put up during the subsequent years. The same period also saw the construction of a very important railroad.

Today, Leadville is largely known to be a popular mountain destination amongst Coloradoans. Its first inhabitants were miners looking to exploit supposed gold reserves. It was originally christened Oro City, the local word for gold at the time. The miners first started streaming in at the turn of the gold rush in 1859.

Nevertheless, the miners never found the gold they were looking for and most of them deserted the town thereafter. It would not take the remaining settlers long to discover a new mineral. They discovered the presence of silver within the lead based mineral cerussite, hence the name Leadville.

Another noteworthy settlement is Idaho Springs. An extensive gold reserve was discovered in it when the gold rush was at its peak. The largest mill that was used then, the Argo, is still on site. Its key function was to mine and process gold.

Como is another town that is also endeared by the locals for its steep history. Its first settlers came to work as coal miners in 1879. They were Italians from Como, Italy, hence the name given to the settlement. When mining operations were at a peak, the area had a huge depot that served the Denver, South Park and Pacific railroad. Surprisingly, the roadhouse has remained unchanged thus far.

Black Hawk is significantly historic as well. It blossomed as a result of gold mining, just as many other towns in the state did. Its mineral output was significant. Its first settlers arrived in 1859, with many of them buoyed by the prospect of earning a living off mining. A large percentage of them would later leave after the depletion of the ore reserves.

Today, the area is primarily known as a gambling metropolis. Many established casinos in the town started in the year 1991 and have stood strong ever since. Not far from Black Hawk is Central City, which is also known to be a gambling hub. If you have time, visit these locations for that retro feel that will jolt you right into the throes of the past.
